Back in 1982 the MG Owners Club asked Automec to supply DOT5 Silicone Brake Fluid (SBF) to compliment the Copper Brake Pipe sets already being supplied.
At that time the 'Cold War' was still hot and since SBF is only made in America the U.S. Secretary of State listed it as a 'strategic product'. Officially we had to get their permission to export it, as they didn't want the Reds getting hold of it. Tales of fires being lit under Russian vehicles to thaw out brake fluid did the rounds.
All American Military light vehicles use SBF which enables them to move vehicles from Okinawa to Alaska without ever changing the brake fluid. The viscosity remains fairly stable through most temperature extremes and it repels moisture.
The Cold War is over and we can send SBF freely anywhere we like now. It's been in all our staff vehicles since 1982, some with ABS, in one instance running up 250,000 miles without a fluid change.
one Hot Product you might say!
